PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The 2200 is a fiber optic, full duplex, asynchronous, RS‑232 data link which supports communication at speeds up to 100 Kbps.  The convenient package may be plugged directly into devices which bring RS‑232 signals to DB25 connectors.  The unique "HIGH‑OR" RS‑232 drivers allow up to four 2200 outputs to be tied together to one conventional RS‑232 output (1488) allowing for daisy‑chain configurations with a 1489 receiver.

There are four connectors on each unit:

                        1)         On one end is the male DB‑25 connector.  This end plugs directly into a terminal or other RS‑232 compatible device.

2, 3, 4)          On the other end there are two fiber optic ports and one power connector.  The fiber optic ports are ST type; one for transmit (Tx) and one for receive (Rx).  The power connector requires +8 vdc to +15 vdc (100 ma) which is usually supplied through either pin 9 or pin 18 of the DB 25 connector or by an optional standard wall power supply.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

The following parts are necessary to make up a complete 2200 Connection:

Two Niwot 2200 RS‑232 modems

Two wall mount power supplies (or power through the DB25 connector)

ST terminated duplex fiber optic cable

The unique 2200 RS‑232 output driver permits multiple 2200s and one conventional RS‑232 device to be wired in parallel.  This capability allows Master/Slave and half‑duplex fiber optic networks to be created with standard terminal equipment.  See Figures 2 and 3 for wiring configuration examples which take advantage of this capability.

The standard 2200 is configured as Data Communication Equipment (DCE) and interface via DB25P connectors to a standard 1488/1489 RS-232 drivers/receivers.

DTE versions and DB25S versions may be ordered.

FCC STATEMENT

This unit complies with Part 15, sub‑Class A, regulations which requires us to make this statement:

"This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy. If not installed according to the instructions in this manual, it may cause interference to radio communications."

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

The standard Niwot 2200 has an open emitter RS‑232 output driver which allows up to four 2200 outputs to be tied together with one conventional RS‑232 output (such as a 1488).  See Figure 1.  Any one of the output drivers being in a "high" state causes the line to be in a "high" state. This is  called "HIGH‑OR."  It allows a variety of daisy‑chain configurations to be implemented.

* DTE option reverses Pins 2 and 3, making Pin 2 the data received from the fiber link and Pin 3 the data to be transmitted over the fiber.

PIN 2 ‑ Transmitted Data (Standard DCE versions)

Input voltage on this pin must exceed +3 volts for a high.  Input voltages less than +2 volts are considered low.  Input impedance when driven high is 2K ohms above +2 volts.  Input impedance when driven low is 2K ohms to ‑0.7 volts.  A high input causes the "Tx" output LED to be turned on.

PIN 3 ‑ Received Data (Standard DCE versions)

Output from this pin is driven high when light is detected at the "Rx" port by the optical receiver.  Output impedance when being driven high is 150 ohms to +4 volts.  Output impedance when being driven low is 10K ohms to ‑5 volts. (Model 2210 causes the output impedance when driven low to be 1K ohms to ‑5 volts).

PINS 9 and 18 ‑ Positive Voltage

Input power between +8 vdc and +15 vdc on these pins may be used instead of the external power supply.  Current requirements are 50 mA (typical) when the fiber-optic transmitter is operating at a 50% duty cycle, and 85 mA (typical, 100 mA max) when the transmitter is stuck on.  The 2200 contains a +5 volt regulator and an inverter which generates ‑5 volts internally.

FIBER CABLE AND LINK CONSIDERATIONS

The standard 2200 may use 62.5/125 or 100/140 micron duplex fiber cable.  Consult with the factory for special fiber/cable needs.

Maximum fiber link distances depend on the specific fiber and cable type used, connector losses, number of splices, use of patch panels, etc.  The following is a rough guide of maximum fiber distances possible for continuous fiber spans.  Good engineering practice dictates that unrepeatered fiber links be planned to always be less than these estimates.

INSTALLATION

To install a Niwot 2200 Fiber Optic Modem, perform the following steps:

                        1.         Plug the 2200 onto the female DB‑25 connector located on the equipment which will drive the modem.

                        2.         If power is not supplied through the DB-25 connector, plug a wall power supply into a nearby wall outlet and then connect the plug at the end of the power supply wire to the power input jack on the 2200.  This jack is located next to the fiber connectors.

                        3.         Remove the protective dust caps from the connectors on the near end of the installed optical fiber.

4.         Remove the protective dust caps from the 2200 optical output ports.

5.      Connect the fiber cable to the optical ports by inserting the bayonet tip of each optical "ST" connector into a port, align key on the sleeve, push on the collar and twist clockwise until locked.  Repeat these steps at the other device, using the other 2200. The "Tx" port at one 2200 must be connected by fiber to the "Rx" port at the other, and vise versa.

Back to Table of Contents

FULL‑DUPLEX MASTER/SLAVE DAISY CHAIN CONFIGURATION

                        1.         In a full‑duplex Master/Slave configuration, a transmission from the Master (only one is allowed) is heard by all attached Slaves.  Any transmission from  any Slave (i.e. any high level being sourced by a Slave) is heard only by the Master.  If two or more Slaves transmit at once, the Master hears the "HIGH‑OR" of their transmissions.

                        2.         The Master DTE output, Pin 2, is connected to Pin 2 of the one to four attached 2200s.  The Master DTE input, Pin 3, is connected to Pin 3 of the one to four attached 2200s.  In this way, any transmission from the Master will be sent out on all of the fibers from the attached 2200 units.

                        3.         The single point Slave connection is achieved by connecting Slave DTE output Pin 2 to Pin 2 of the first attached 2200.  The Slave DTE input Pin 3 is connected to Pin 3 of this first attached 2200.  Any High transmission from the Slave will appear on the Master DTE's input.

                        4.         The daisy chain Slave connection is achieved by adding additional 2200s to the single point Slave connection described in Item 3, above.  These additional one to three 2200s have Pin 2 connected to the "first" 2200's Pin 3; the 2200's Pin 3 is connected to the "first" 2200's Pin 2.

Note: Keep copper cable distances below 20 feet in daisy chain configurations.

Figure 1 Basic configuration

Back to Table of Contents

HALF‑DUPLEX DAISY CHAIN CONFIGURATION

The Hub is designated as that place on the network where Pins 2 and 3 are connected together. This may only occur in one place.  The Hub location may contain from one to four 2200s and zero or one conventional RS‑232 devices.  A transmission from any attached unit is heard by all attached units.  Additional devices may be connected by treating the Hub as a Master and using the Slave daisy chain connection described above to connect additional devices.
